POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Director of Surgical Services
DEPARTMENT: Patient Services
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
Develops, implements, coordinates, and manages all aspects of the Surgical Services. Interfaces and coordinates all aspects of care concerns between the clinical staff and physicians. Participates in quality improvement and evaluation processes related to the Surgical Services. Responsible for reviewing and maintaining the cost effectiveness in the provision of Surgical Services.

Responsible to: Chief Nursing Officer Nature of supervision received: Indirect Positions directly supervised: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Surgical Technicians, Central Techs, and OR Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:
Graduate of a school of nursing. Must hold current licensure in West Virginia. Bachelors degree in Nursing
WORK EXPERIENCE: A minimum of three years experience in Surgical Services. Previous management experience required. Previous management experience in Surgical Services preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Must be able to verbally communicate, coordinate, motivate and collaborate with others. Must be able to effectively recognize the unique needs of patients of all ages including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and geriatrics. Must maintain a current and thorough knowledge of nursing service policies, procedures and philosophies. Must be able to prioritize and delegate effectively. Must be able to judge and problem solve based on assessment of a particular situation. Must possess good inductive and deductive reasoning skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have stamina to work in an on-going stressful environment. Must possess visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity. Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time and from different hospital units to units. Must be able to perform tasks, while using proper body mechanics with the ability to lift, move and transfer patients. Must be able to think quickly and perform multiple tasks.
