POSITION TITLE: Director of Surgical Services

DEPARTMENT: Patient Services (Nursing)

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:

Develops, implements, coordinates, and manages all aspects of the Surgical Services. Interfaces and coordinates all aspects of care concerns between the clinical staff and physicians. Participates in quality improvement and evaluation processes related to the Surgical Services. Responsible for reviewing and maintaining the cost effectiveness in the provision of Surgical Services.

Nurses, Nursing Assistants, Surgical

Technicians, Central Techs, and OR

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.

The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time.

  1. Assumes responsibility and accountability for overall quality of

patient care in the Surgical Services.

  1. Assumes responsibility and accountability for the financial management

aspects of the Surgical Services.

  1. Ensures patient care is assigned according to the proficiency level of

personnel.

  1. Ensures the Surgical Services are organized for maximum efficiency and

quality control standards are maintained.

  1. Ensures the provision of quality care by maintaining appropriate

equipment and tools are available, working and meet safety standards.

  1. Assumes responsibility as an intra/inter departmental liaison for

staff and physicians.

  1. Ensures an emphasis is placed on customer service and relations and

provides an example for staff to follow.

  1. Provides a continuous evaluation and counseling of employees.
  2. Provides a work environment conducive to open interactive dialogue.
  3. Ensures on-going communication with the Chief Nursing Officer

and keeps both the Chief Nursing Officer and the Risk Manager apprised

of quality concerns, cost effective care and risk management issues.

  1. Responsible for compliance with JCAHO standards, state standards and

other regulatory agency standards.

  1. Hires, supervises, counsels and terminates employees, as appropriate,

with consultation with the Chief Nursing Officer and the

Human Resource Department.

  1. Holds monthly meetings with staff in the Surgical Services Department

to inform staff of corporate goals, philosophies and informational

bullets.

  1. Attends mandatory inservices.
  2. Keeps the Chief Nursing Officer informed of all significant

developments and events.

  1. Is consistently supportive of the hospital leadership and mission and

is a positive team member at all times.

  1. Demonstrates excellence in customer service skills.
  2. Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.
  3. Participates in quality improvement activities including serving on

quality improvement teams.

  1. Performs other job related duties as assigned.
  2. Complies with Corporate Policies, Departmental Policies and Procedures

and Personnel Employee Handbook.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements

necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.

EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:

Graduate of a school of nursing. Must hold current licensure in West

Virginia. Bachelors degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of three years experience in Surgical Services. Previous

management experience required. Previous management experience in Surgical Services preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must be able to verbally communicate, coordinate, motivate and collaborate with others. Must be able to effectively recognize the unique needs of

patients of all ages including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents and

geriatrics. Must maintain a current and thorough knowledge of nursing

service policies, procedures and philosophies. Must be able to prioritize

and delegate effectively. Must be able to judge and problem solve based on assessment of a particular situation. Must possess good inductive and

deductive reasoning skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have stamina to work in an on-going stressful environment. Must

possess visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity. Must be able to

walk and stand for extended periods of time and from different hospital

units to units. Must be able to perform tasks, while using proper body

mechanics with the ability to lift, move and transfer patients. Must be

able to think quickly and perform multiple tasks.
