Principal Archaeologist

Sequence has been exclusively retained and is currently seeking a dynamic Principal Investigator and Field Manager for Cultural Resources and Archeologist Activities here in Washington.

This is currently the highest profile position of its kind in within the niche industry here in the region.

We are seeking a qualified individual possessing a passion for cultural resource management with strong background in Archaeology, preferably holding a master's degree in Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology.

Our client, one of the mid-wests leading cultural practices focused on land rights and development, has a significant backlog of client work and many established private and government contracts. With a recent retirement, they are seeking to expand practice efforts and bring on board a professional to help lead their cultural resource team and manage various projects in the field. Responsibilities include conducting surveys to identify archaeological sites, testing to assess their significance, and contributing to mitigation projects to preserve and protect these cultural resources.

General responsibilities include:

  1. Phase I Surveys: You will take the lead in conducting Phase I surveys, which involve systematically identifying and evaluating archaeological sites within a designated project area. This will require you to apply your knowledge of survey methods, archaeological theory, and historical research to assess the potential for cultural resources.
  2. Phase Ib, Ic, and II Testing: You will be responsible for conducting Phase Ib, Ic, and II testing, which involves the excavation and analysis of archaeological sites to determine their significance and eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This may include excavation, artifact recovery, and documentation.
  3. Authoring and Editing Reports: A critical aspect of your role will be preparing comprehensive and accurate reports documenting the findings and analyses from fieldwork and research. You will write and edit these reports, adhering to industry standards and project requirements. Clear and concise communication skills will be essential in conveying complex archaeological information effectively.
  4. Carrying Out QAQC on Peer's Documents: As part of the quality control process, you will review and conduct Quality Assurance/Quality Control QAQC) checks on documents prepared by your peers. This involves ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project guidelines, regulations, and industry standards.
  5. Directing Analysis of Artifacts: Your expertise in artifact analysis will be valuable in helping to analyze and interpret archaeological material recovered from excavation and survey activities. You will contribute to understanding cultural contexts, chronology, and archaeological significance by examining and interpreting artifacts and other material culture.
  6. Undertaking Leadership/Mentoring of Staff: As an experienced Cultural Resources Archaeologist, you will be vital in providing leadership and mentoring to more junior staff members. This includes guiding them in field techniques, research methods, report writing, and professional development. Your guidance and expertise will contribute to their growth and enhance the team's overall capabilities.
