Job Description

Payroll Tax Analyst – Memphis, TN

Responsible for all payroll tax activities, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Responds to questions and special request from employees and regulatory agencies; researching laws and regulations regarding tax and payroll withholding procedures. Developing payroll tax strategy and policy. Evaluates current systems and recommends and develops operating efficiency improvements.


  • Analyze reports and prepare account reconciliations for federal, state, and local taxes that are submitted to a third-party provider
  • Set-up all new tax codes in payroll system and communicate to the third-party provider of the set-up
  • Calculate and process federal, state, and local tax withholdings for noncash transactions which includes fringe benefit and stock imputes
  • Audit payroll information for accuracy; analyzing system generated and ad-hoc reports alerting to problems or errors
  • Create and analyze payroll data reports as necessary
  • Calculate, balance, reconcile payroll calculations, and resolve calculation errors and discrepancies pertaining to payroll tax
  • Interprets, apply, communicate, and enforce payroll policies and procedures; maintain knowledge of rules and laws that govern the payroll administration practices
  • Participate in testing and deployment of change and maintenance activities within the Workday system and process as needed
  • May collaborate with outsourcing partners and internal customers to ensure proper administration of payroll and tax filings
  • Apply subject matter expertise to deliver high level support for payroll services
  • May lead projects related to payroll and coordinate project support
  • Responsible for ensuring payroll processing accurately reflects company specific pay policies
  • May act as liaison to employees and with third-party payroll vendors.
  • Coordinates third-party payroll system implementations and upgrades
  • Works directly with employees to resolve outstanding payroll inquiries
  • Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions
  • Interprets internal or external business issues and recommends solutions/best practices


  • Requires in-depth knowledge and experience with payroll tax; preferably with Workday experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of education and experience
  • Role typically requires more than 5 years of tax experience
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) credential
  • Experience with federal, state, and local tax return filing
