Director of Plastic Offsets / Credits

Focus: Development Program, Content, Customer Relations, and Compliance

Sequence, the leading firm for recruitment of Environment, Sustainability/ESG, and Climate-related professionals, has been exclusively retained and is currently seeking a capable manager to serve as Director for one of the world's largest ocean cleanup organizations focused on Plastics.

This is currently the highest-profile position of its like globally.

Specifically, we are seeking to find an individual responsible for the development, growth, and scale of the organization's Plastic Offsets Program. This is a hybrid position charged with building and developing the key foundational aspects of their plastic offsets and then working hand in hand with internal marketing teams and communications leadership in developing all collateral materials, programs and offerings to support the rollout to business partners. One might liken this to a cross between offsets program development meets collateral materials creation and the follow-on client interaction.

Plastic pollution is one of our planet's most significant and rapidly growing threats. It's estimated that some eighteen trillion pounds of plastic have been produced globally since 1950. Ironically, only 9% of all that plastic has been recycled. Perhaps more alarming, some 18 billion pounds of trash are estimated to enter the oceans yearly.

Plastic offsets are a new area of the industry that is constantly evolving. While not as well-founded or recognized as carbon offsets and credits, it is becoming a well-established area of sustainability. Perhaps more notably, it is often seen as a more tangible sustainable offset as it can be directly traced to ocean recovery. Plastic's effect on our ecosystems is undeniably tied to some of the worst massacres of marine life in the history of our planet, killing an estimated 100,000 marine mammals and millions of birds and fish annually.

Our client personnel currently remove millions of pounds of plastic annually from the ocean. And they are just getting started.

Traditionally, their efforts are marketed with support from environmentally friendly product sales and support from individuals and consumers concerned about the environment. The organization is now working to create a robust plastic offsets operation that balances the negative impact of individual and corporate plastic footprint by funding projects that have a positive impact on the environment. For instance, the company can offer partners the ability to offset their plastic footprint by recovering an equivalent amount of plastic waste from the world's oceans, rivers, and coastlines. They then issue the organization a Plastic Neutral Certification offset. This then leads to the potential of creating plastic neutrality; which can be awarded for a specific timeframe, with the opportunity of true plastic neutrality being achieved by offsetting an individual's lifetime use or by offsetting a company's plastic footprint for every year they have been in business.

As the organization now braces for significant growth and expansion of its operations, what is required now is a key individual responsible for the development, growth, and communication of the company's plastic offsets/credits program. Specifically, this focus on:

  1. Building, developing, and scaling the plastic offset program.
  2. Working closely with the CEO and Marketing team to develop all sales materials, programs, offerings, and team.
  3. Leading internal teams, holding responsibility for keeping people accountable to KPI's.
  4. Managing key relationships with national and international business partners, making sure all accounts receive deliverables and are well serviced.
  5. Driving cross-functional teamwork coordination; working with diverse departments to make sure all projects move smoothly and are completed on schedule.

Ideally, this includes deeply understanding ESG principles and how they apply to corporations. In particular, related knowledge of carbon credits, GHG, offsets, plastic offsets, ESG reporting, etc. Someone involved with other related industries for water, carbon, and associated types of offsets efforts might be an ideal fit for this role.

Of note, this position would be responsible for all partnership opportunities programs with plastics. A heavy emphasis of this role would be developing the organization's programs further, creating the materials and messaging, and then supporting partners and customers thereafter. There is also a bit of a compliance aspect with branding.

The company believes that People are its most important asset. The company has a corporate culture that values individuals as resources. The organization has loyal employees who have been with the company for many years. They have watched it grow from a fledgling organization to one that has developed and built global operations. Their approach is to solicit – indeed to expect – input from each of its employees. They tell us that they foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and encourage the free exchange of ideas to remain a vibrant, thriving company. Leadership believes that this unique culture has resulted in the company having some of the industry's most engaged employees and one of the key reasons it leads industry competitors in key performance metrics of note by comparison.

This carries over to benefits as well as rewards for hard work. Beyond salary and bonus/commissions, which we generally discussed, the company offers a strong benefits package (Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance plan as well as 401k, Flexible Spending Account, EAP programs, and PTO).

Still in startup mode, the organization is offering a more moderate base salary and bonus. But the role has potential stake options as they grow and expand operations (something they are poised to do significantly).

This position is slated to be based onsite in Florida with occasional light travel. Some traveling globally is optional if desired.
