About Literacy Mid-South For over 45 years, Literacy Mid-South (LMS) has been a beacon of educational empowerment, fostering a culture of lifelong learning through literacy programs that support both children and adults. Originally founded as the Memphis Literacy Council in 1974, the organization has continually evolved to meet the growing literacy needs of the Mid-South region. Key Responsibilities
Visionary Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Lead the development and implementation of LMS’s strategic direction, focusing on scalable programs, community partnerships, and measurable educational outcomes.
- Foster a culture of innovation, excellence, and inclusivity within the organization while ensuring a sharp focus on community impact and educational equity.
- Position LMS as the primary convener of literacy-focused organizations, uniting stakeholders across sectors to drive collective impact.
Board & Governance Leadership
- Partner closely with the Board of Directors to ensure alignment on organizational strategy, governance, and fundraising efforts.
- Lead the Board’s engagement in fundraising, advocacy, and governance to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of LMS’s mission.
- Maintain transparent and effective communication between leadership and the Board, ensuring that key metrics and milestones are met.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
- Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for literacy across Memphis and the Mid-South, fostering deep relationships with community leaders, school districts, and policymakers.
- Lead efforts to advocate for policies that promote educational equity and address the systemic barriers that impact learners.
- Strengthen LMS’s relationships with educational entities to ensure mutual growth and impact.
Financial Stewardship & Resource Development
- Ensure LMS’s financial health by overseeing budget development, resource allocation, and financial strategies that support long-term sustainability.
- Lead fundraising efforts to diversify revenue streams, securing multi-year funding commitments from foundations, corporate sponsors, and individual donors.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive resource development strategy, ensuring that LMS can expand its reach and continue to provide critical literacy services.
Staff Leadership & Organizational Culture
- Lead and inspire a passionate, mission-driven team, focusing on professional development, staff retention, and alignment with LMS’s core values.
- Create a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability, ensuring that every team member feels valued and supported in their work.
- Optimize internal operations to enhance team culture, employee satisfaction, and the effectiveness of literacy programs across the region.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in education, public administration, social work, or a related field preferred.
- Experience: 10-15 years of senior leadership experience in nonprofit, education, or mission-driven organizations, with at least7 years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven experience in fundraising, securing grants, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations, with a focus on community-based or educational initiatives.
- Strong track record of board management and governance, with the ability to align the Board of Directors with organizational goals and fundraising priorities.
- Political savvy, with the ability to navigate complex community and political dynamics to advocate for educational equity and literacy programs.
- Financial acumen, with experience overseeing nonprofit budgets, managing resource allocation, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
- A passionate advocate for literacy, committed to adult education and equity in all forms.
- Community ties to Memphis, with an understanding of the local education system and its challenges, along with strong relationships in the area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading organizations through strategic growth and expansion, particularly in the educational or social justice sectors.
- Expertise in adult literacy and educational program design, with a deep understanding of best practices in literacy education.
- Familiarity with public education systems, including the political and funding dynamics involved in literacy and education reform.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: Starting at $125,000, with the final compensation package commensurate with experience.
