Traditional Owner member and Proxies to the Reef 2050 Advisory Committee


The Australian Government is seeking expressions of interest for a Traditional Owner member and Proxies to the Reef 2050 Advisory Committee. This is an exciting opportunity for strategic and collaborative leaders to create a real, lasting impact for Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef.

About the Advisory Committee
The Reef 2050 Advisory Committee facilitates engagement with industry and the broader community on the implementation and review of the Reef 2050 Plan. It may also be asked to provide advice on other Reef matters including the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan, Reef Trust, and other initiatives (including advice to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority where requested). The Reef 2050 Advisory Committee provides a forum for representatives of government, key organisations and interest groups to discuss and resolve issues, and, as far as possible, should aim to reach consensus on matters.

About the Opportunities
The membership already includes one male Traditional Owner. We are seeking expressions of interest from female Traditional Owners of the Great Barrier Reef to fill a second position, as well as expressions of interest for proxies for both the male and female positions for the Reef 2050 Advisory Committee.

About You
Your location is flexible, as you will travel to attend 3 full-day face-to-face meetings per year with preparation estimated to take one day per meeting. You will be remunerated for your time to attend and prepare for meetings, and your travel expenses will be covered.

To be considered for these positions, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Experience engaging with and representing the interest of Indigenous peoples and Traditional Owners, to fairly represent their interests.
  • Experience engaging in and knowledge of cross-jurisdictional reef policy matters, particularly the Reef 2050 Plan.

Desired skills and attributes for these positions include:
  • Ability to facilitate engagement with the broader Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owner community.
  • Ability to provide advice on strategic Reef policy matters in your area of expertise.
  • Ability to provide community perspectives across the Reef catchments.
  • Recognised for your integrity, high ethical standards and impartially able to consider all sides.
  • Commitment to finding common ground in implementation of actions for the benefit of the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Knowledge of public policy direction.
  • Willingness and ability to devote time and energy to the role and are committed, trusted and loyal to your role.
  • Ability and willingness to challenge decisions and probe for further information.
  • Possess common sense and sound judgement and uphold credibility and gravitas.
