Sequence has been exclusively retained and is currently seeking a dynamic, highly driven individual to take on the role of Practice Leader (VP of Transportation) with emphasis on operations and business/market development. Our client, a leading, well-respected niche transportation planning, engineering firm, is tackling some of the industry’s most unique challenges and projects.
Slotted to be based in Florida or Georgia, this is currently one of the industry’s highest-profile practice/market leadership positions available in the southeastern United States.
It is also the likely dream job of every professional seeking to find a key role in a more intimate organization; an opportunity to lead the way in creating a new practice group a mid-sized and growing consulting organization.
Based in the southeast, with multiple branches and satellite offices, the firm has been developing successfully and aggressively through organic growth throughout the region in recent years. With this growth has come the need to continuously build internal resources and add technical skill sets.
This has also resulted in a number of wildly expanded opportunities in the transportation market presenting themselves if they have the bandwidth to take on and address the challenges associated with tackling them. Chiefly among these is growing out the practice within the transportation sector with a leader who will act as the operations/technical lead and rainmaker for the organization. Emphasis and responsibility for identifying, targeting, and marketing the firm’s services to the public and private sectors.
Focus being on providing multidiscipline design and design related services to state and municipal throughout the southeastern region (key target markets: Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina).
This in mind, our client has tasked us with finding them a capable Vice President of Transportation who can help them grow and develop the niche market. Someone that is an established professional and knowledgeable in the sector who leverage their connections and experience to develop clients, bring in, and service projects. Generally speaking, the ideal candidate will have a blend of selling and doing, with likely business development and client relationships creation a heavier focus initially.
The role would have project management and technical oversight responsibilities, but at first, this can be supported by a full existing staff. As the practice continue to grow and projects are generated, they are happy to hire more higher-level technical professionals to support the role as well. This is a continued practice-building process, and the firm will expend whatever resources are necessary to expand the practice and meet work requirements. Key to being find the right leader.
Generally speaking, key duties and responsibilities can be broken into four key areas (Strategic Efforts, Marketing/Business Development, Operations, and Technical Oversight). Coordinate overall strategic direction of the group
Strategy
- Practice and resource alignment in target markets for services to meet existing and future growth, goals, and objectives
- Establish strategic market position/service offerings for the group to align with client needs and strategic focus
Market/Business Development
- Serve as leader for new pursuit efforts in partnership with company executive management and the organization’s marketing team.
- Hold all Go/No-Go authority on new opportunities and pursuits.
- Assess strategic hires and talent to better position the firm on pursuits.
- Engage with DOT and other clients to evaluate, establish, and support service offerings to further position the firm for success in target markets.
Operations
- Hold responsibility for all day-to-day operations, overall resource management, and financial metrics for the practice group.
- Oversee Project Managers and Design Team in daily decisions on resource distribution, staffing, and project budgets.
- Assess resource, allocation, and effectiveness for current and future needs
- Train, mentor and empower personnel; instill a culture of professional development in the practice group.
Technical
- Serve as Project Director, Sr. Design Manager, or Sr. Project Manager as needed to win pursuits, ensure technical quality, and manage client relationships.
- Manage group Quality Assurance Program
- Contribute to Transportation practice in branding and technical competency as field experts.
The ideal candidate will have at least 15+ years of experience and abilities in the transportation and transit field and be capable with business and client relationship development /management experience.
Though an engineer might be an excellent fit, the firm is more than happy to talk to anyone with a planning, architecture or related background in transportation that has domain experience within the sector.
Our client is offering very competitive compensation, solid benefits, vacation, and performance bonus, etc. Beyond a path to Principal Ownership the firm would even consider merging an existing smaller practice into the organization. For the right individual, nearly anything within reason can be structured.
The position is slotted to be based in either Jacksonville, FL or Atlanta, GA, but could potentially be based in Alabama, South Carolina, or Louisiana. Relocation support from anywhere in the country would be available.
