Job Description

Traveling Superintendent – Tanks / Concrete Structures

Sequence has been exclusively retained and is currently seeking a capable Superintendent for one of the nation’s leading constructors of Prestressed Concrete Tanks and Structures.

Our client hardly ever hires from outside, preferring to develop talent and promote personnel internally. Today though, because of an explosion of long-term work and recent retirements, they have tasked us with finding them a capable Superintend to join their ranks. This is a unique opportunity with an exceptional organization.

It is also currently the highest-profile position of its kind available in the niche industry.

Having built over 5,000 tanks of note, many of which are exclusive to specialized industry applications, the organization has several proprietary construction methods and processes. So, new employees are immersed in a deep initial training to get fully up to speed. Because of this, specific experience in Tank Construction (though potentially desirable) is not required. The company will train incoming personnel to manage their specific type of work.

What is needed though is a capable construction professional who understands and can implement effective scheduling methods and manage onsite field personnel. So proven experience as a Superintendent and willingness to learn is key. The company has significant logistics infrastructure, so Superintendents come to project sites with their work crews having the vast majority of site activities already staged - more about executing and getting work done.

Key, then, is to have a self-motivated individual capable of working and leading efforts to serve as Superintendent for projects.

So, we are seeking a capable Superintendent to manage project construction to ensure high-quality work is produced within budget and on schedule. This role holds full responsibility for constructing tanks in an efficient and safe manner through effective management of employees, materials, and equipment under his/her direction.

General Duties include:
  • Understand and implement effective scheduling methods.
  • Understand and implement modern safety practices and procedures while executing an effective jobsite safety program.
  • Instruct, train and commission employees to ensure safe compliance with proper material usage, approved construction methods, and operating procedures.
  • Delegate responsibilities to subordinates while remaining accountable for their performance.
  • Coordinate closely with the Project Manager and Area Manager on the project to ensure the project stays on schedule and within budget.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct ongoing training sessions for employees such as toolbox talks and online training sessions.
  • Maintain effective, cooperative, working relationships with general contractors, subcontractors, owners, engineers, etc.
  • Must be able to execute tank construction in accordance with the plans to the most finite detail with 100% accuracy.
  • Attend preconstruction meetings; prepare site for job start.
  • Conduct daily inspections of the job to ensure job is on schedule, safe and all materials are in order.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and secure jobsite during construction, including surrounding site areas, free of trash and debris.
  • Submit all administrative paperwork accurately and timely to the appropriate department.
  • Assign specific duties and resources to crew members, and monitor their performance, making adjustments where needed.
  • Show competency in ability to handle shotcrete operations, including the equipment setup, use of materials, assignment of personnel, and the daily planning requirements for the crew.
  • Ensure that all company and OSHA safety rules and regulations are adhered to at all times. Take immediate action when deficiencies are discovered.
  • Train a “second-in-command” to facilitate ongoing management of the project when it is necessary for the superintendent to be absent from the jobsite. This person must be able to effectively communicate, organize, and lead the entire crew.
The position requires previous experience as a Superintendent, with concrete experience a strong plus to consideration, but not required.
The position can be remotely based in any location in the Southeast United States so long as it has travel access. With locations like Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida being noted as examples of geographic areas that give good regional work access. The position is on the road constantly, traveling 90% of the time to project sites. Beyond being provided with a company vehicle while on the road, employees receive weekly per diem and get a company-paid monthly flight back home if a project extends beyond several weeks.

In addition to compensation, the company has a full benefits package (health care, 401k, vacation, etc.).

Our client has built a corporate culture that values individuals as essential resources. The organization has dedicated employees who have been with the organization for many years. They have watched the company grow from its fledgling size to a diverse and thriving operation. Leadership believes that their unique corporate culture is responsible for this growth and the company having some of the most engaged and highly productive employees.

If that resonates with you, then you are an excellent fit to the corporate culture.
