Marine Archaeologist / Principal Investigator
Sequence has been exclusively retained and is currently seeking a Principal Investigator in Marine Archaeology responsible for managing technical aspects of maritime archaeological projects. This unique role is slated to direct both technical field operations as well as undertake higher-level reporting and client interactions.It is currently the most high-profile opportunity of its kind in the niche industry with opportunities for career advancement and practice development. It can be based remotely anywhere in the mid-west, north/southeast, or the southwestern United States.
Our client, one of the nation's most respected Archeology consulting firms, is significantly growing its marine archeology practice efforts fueled by a host of wind, energy, and development undertakings coupled with more traditional heritage and historic site engagements.
With specific relation to the operations field activities, the firm has tasked us with finding a key Principal Investigator responsible for the execution of maritime project research, fieldwork, report preparation and content, National Register evaluation recommendations, evaluations of project effects, cultural resource management recommendations, and proper curation of project artifacts and records at an approved curation facility.
Key duties and responsibilities would include:
- Timely and cost-effective conception, implementation, and completion of projects.
- Management of multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
- Development of project-specific budgets, personnel assignments, schedules, research goals, work plans, deliverables, and resource-specific recommendations.
- Demonstrate understanding the requirements of the scope of work, using professional expertise with management standards regarding the identification and treatment of historic properties in federal waters.
- Performing background research and literature review to develop historical contexts and probability models and develop risk assessments for project development,
- Collecting and interpreting geophysical remote sensing survey data including side-scan sonar, magnetometer, gradiometer, sub-bottom profiler systems, and/or multibeam.
- Evaluate remote sensing targets to determine if they represent cultural resources that may meet the criteria to be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places,
- Hold responsibility for QA/QC and the organization and completion of project-specific reports.
- Develop professional recommendations for the management of cultural resources, particularly archaeological resources, using the National Register of Historic Places and other applicable criteria.
- Participate in public outreach programs to educate people about the importance of archaeological resources and Heritage Management at the project, professional, and/or community levels.
- Train, manage, and evaluate less experienced personnel as necessary to achieve project goals and company goals for professional development.
Through the organization would ideally like the position based near one of their many offices, the position could be remote with travel to perform projects or company-related tasks (travel is project-dependent with an expectation of travel for multiple days on occasion – primarily within the United States).
The position requires:
- M.A./M.S. in Anthropology, Archaeology, emphasizing underwater archaeology or related field, plus five years of CRM supervisory and report preparation experience.
- Ability to function as a Qualified Marine Archaeologist (QMA) to Bureau of Ocean Energy/Management (BOEM) Guidelines, including the ability to meet SOI qualifications.
- Familiarity with management standards regarding identification and treatment of historic properties in federal waters.
- Experience collecting and interpreting geophysical remote sensing survey data, including side-scan sonar, magnetometer, gradiometer, sub-bottom profiler systems, and/or multibeam.
- Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA).
- Certified diver with demonstrated scientific diver training.
