National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest nurses’ union, seeks an experienced Secretary to
work in the union’s federal Government Relations department.
NNU leads the
registered nurse movement to transform the market-driven health care industry
in the United States into a health care system driven by patient needs. NNU has
negotiated the best registered nurse collective bargaining contracts in the
nation and provides critical leadership in the labor and social justice
movements on multiple issues including Medicare for All, health and safety
protections for health care workers, environmental justice and climate change,
and labor law reform.
Under the
direction of the National Political Government Relations Director, the
Secretary will
provide crucial research, political, legislative, and administrative
assistance. They will support the work of the Legislative and Political teams as well as support staff in a broad range of
programmatic objectives to build and strengthen our union’s legislative,
political, and electoral infrastructure in our hospital facilities and our
communities. They will also support staff who engage in the international work
of the union to build global union nurse solidarity.
Working
closely with the Legislative and Political staff, the Secretary will be charged
with managing multiple priorities, developing written products for the Web and
use in Hill visits, conducting research into pressing public policy areas,
setting up Hill meetings and reports, and other support-related tasks as
needed. This person may also attend relevant meetings, events and Hill
briefings as needed, and would assist the Political Director in mailing,
collecting, and organizing campaign questionnaires and related materials during
the busy election season.
Qualified
candidates must have experience working as support staff in a dynamic and
fast-paced environment. The position requires excellent multi-tasking and
prioritization skills, strong attention to detail, exceptional communication
skills, and logistical experience in event development and execution. Qualified
candidates must also possess self-initiative/motivation and be able to perform
administrative duties under pressure. This individual must be a self-starter with an
interest in politics and a keen eye for opportunity. Excellent writing and
research skills, both online and off, knowledge of organizing principles and
social movements, and sound political judgment are also required.
Additional
required skills include word processing, data entry, basic accounting
administrative support, operation of office equipment, general administrative
support, and special projects as assigned. Proficiency in both Microsoft Office
Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Documents is required.
Three to five years working as a secretary or with office management experience
is preferred.
This
position often requires an intense schedule and the ability to deal with a wide
range of personalities and demands under pressure. The ideal candidate will
have some experience supporting legislative and/or political work, advocacy, or
political campaign experience, or have worked as a student leader or organizer
for a cause. Spanish-language fluency is a plus. Applicants must be able
to work successfully on their own and as part of a team.
Salary and
Benefits: Competitive
annual salary depending on experience $71,076 to $122,424 and outstanding
benefits offered, including comprehensive family health & dental plan, and generous
pension.
