Educator, California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (AFL-CIO)
Location: Oakland, California
California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the nation’s largest labor union and professional association of registered nurses. CNA/NNU’s unique education programs equip union nurses with the critical and analytical skills they need to effectively fight for democratic workplaces, a just health care system, and equitable communities.
We seek experienced educators ready to build RNs’ movement for worker power, universal health care, and social justice. Ideal candidates have strong research skills and demonstrated success using creative teaching methods to help learners turn knowledge into collective action.
In addition to supporting organizing and bargaining campaigns, educators develop and teach material across a broad range of topics to help to prepare CNA/NNU members and movement allies to navigate some of the world’s most challenging health concerns, from economic inequality, racial injustice, and gender inequity to climate change and global health disparities.
Educators work primarily across three program areas:
· Continuing Education classes and workshops that help nurses connect their day-to-day work experience to the broader economic and political forces that shape the health care system; bring perspective on patient advocacy as a social justice practice; and explore avenues for improving the health and safety of nurses, patients, and communities through collective action.
· Political Education workshops and webinars for NNU members, labor and social movement allies, and the public.
· NNU’s University Program, which offers a unique online certificate program in Women’s Global Health Leadership in partnership with Rutgers. Semester-length, credit-bearing classes focus on a wide range of topics related to global health and justice. Classes contain a mix of Rutgers undergraduates and NNU members who receive scholarships to attend.
