BACKGROUND: Services for the UnderServed (S:US) is a $250M New York-based not-for-profit organization that every year provides housing and support services to more than 37,000 individuals and families in New York City and Long Island. S:US believes every New Yorker has the right to lead a life of purpose. For over 40 years through the work of its 2,000 staff, S:US has been transforming this belief into reality by working as an advocate for people with life circumstances marked by intellectual/developmental disability, mental health and addiction challenges, poverty, histories of incarceration, and trauma. S:US’s history has been about supporting people and communities that have been marginalized, communities of color, and communities impacted by poverty.

S:US’s uniqueness lies in its ability to treat the whole person. The organization provides a broad range of services to address needs, including affordable housing and shelter; treatment and rehabilitation; skills-building, job training, and employment opportunities; crisis services; care coordination; anti-eviction assistance; family support; and therapeutic horticulture and nutrition programming.

S:US is one of the largest supported housing developers and service providers in New York State. Headquartered in Manhattan, S:US has programs and housing sites in all 5 boroughs and on Long Island. Its real estate portfolio is valued at over $350M, and it currently oversees an additional 2,200 units of housing in pre-development or construction. THE OPPORTUNITY: Donna Colonna, who has served as a passionate and dedicated President and CEO to S:US for 25 years, will retire at the end of January 2022. She will stay on throughout that year to serve as an advisor to the Board and the new CEO to help ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

The next CEO will establish a vision and the strategy for the community impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of leaders and staff. The CEO leverages the power of relationships and networks and works across different sectors to improve the lives of those S:US serves. The CEO serves as the public face and voice of S:US and is expected to bring visibility to the work and position of the organization as an effective, innovative industry leader. Additionally, the CEO, along with the leadership team, oversees programmatic, financial, and operational functioning of the organization.

The CEO reports to and works in partnership with the S:US Board of Directors. He/she/they must bring an authentic mission connection and be a visionary, broad thinker and influential leader who is able to assess and respond to current priorities while looking ahead and anticipating necessary strategic adjustments that drive organizational stability and growth.

FUNDING: S:US has a current operating budget of approximately $250 million, with more than 95% of its funding from government grants and contracts. In FY 19 (pre-COVID-19) private contributed revenue was $2.1M. S:US has as a strategic priority a commitment to increase private source revenue and to foster a robust culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A genuine passion for the S:US mission.
  • 15+ years of progressive executive level experience, ideally running an organization dedicated to driving scalable solutions that contribute to righting societal imbalances.
  • Prior not-for-profit direct relevant service provider experience.
  • Experience managing a large, complex, multisite organization.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with an engaged Board of Directors.
  • Demonstrated commitment to instituting and monitoring impact and outcomes and continuous quality improvement.
  • Willing and able to be a frontline fundraiser and ambassador for the organization.
  • Deep understanding of best practices in not-for-profit operations, finance, and management.
  • Established relationships within the NYC and NYS government, business, and philanthropic communities.
  • Comfortable with data and analytics.
  • Genuine commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and access in principle and in practice in all aspects of the workplace.
  • A love for NYC and an appreciation for how S:US contributes to the greater good of the city.

  • Exceptional judgment and integrity.

  • Bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree in human services or a related field in desirable.
