Job Description |
VMD is seeking a Lead SQL Server Database Engineer to support the Department of State in Arlington, VA. This person will act as a high level expert in the area of SQL Server Database Administration and Engineering.
This person will be responsible for the following:
- Manages the Data Engineering team of 10-12 responsible for database administration, data integrity, data quality, reporting, statistics, and predictive analytics
- Assists, defines, and oversees database organizations, standards, controls, procedures, and documentation
- Oversees the design and develops database objects (tables, stored procedures, views, etc.) necessary to support reporting systems
- Oversees the design and development of dashboards, reports and reporting systems as comprehensive reporting solutions
- Designs, implements, and maintains databases with respect to access methods, access time, batch processes, device allocation, validation checks, organization, protection and security, documentation, and statistical methods
- Develops reports, stored procedures, etc. to help solve database solutions to business problems, data architectures, database management system facilities and capabilities, and the operation and tuning of databases
- Analyzes data sources and creates data import and export scripts.
- Develops and implements technical innovations to improve the reliability and performance of the database
- Maintains SLAs to support timely and quality customer service
- Implements proactive database monitoring and alerts to maintain the database integrity and performance
- Ensures that all data sharing, networking connections, and reporting requirements with our RPC partners and PRM are maintained
- Executes processes in SQL databases such as stored procedures/functions/packages, database jobs, materialized views, views, synonyms, and DB links
- Conducts weekly staff meetings and ensure that all personnel are provided with the best guidance, constructive criticism, and candid evaluation possible
- Attends to staffing needs, such as interviewing, rewards & recognition, mentoring, and conflict resolution
- Compensation management and annual performance evaluation of staff members.
- Works with the entire Production Support staff to ensure good training plans and compliance training
- Receives and understands task priorities as articulated by Senior Management. Plan delegations and individual work load in conjunction with those priorities

Job Requirements |
Education:
This position requires a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Science or related field.
Required Skills / Experience:
- Ten (10) years relevant experience
- Experience managing database tuning, replication, backup and recovery processes, and product upgrades using Microsoft SQL Server.
- Experience designing databases to support transaction and data growth and support on various platforms.
- Experience in platform independent techniques to support SLAs.
- Experience writing white papers, recommending COTS product purchases to management, conducting white-board presentations to management.
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server monitoring and tuning products such as Solarwinds
- Strong communication capabilities
- Experience with database design
- Experience supporting large scale databases
Preferred Skills / Experience:
- UI design experience, including developing, modifying and deploying SharePoint master pages
- Microsoft certifications
- Ability to troubleshoot and test applications in separate development, staging and production environments
- Experience with government section 508 compliance standards
- Knowledge and experience in using PowerShell to perform routine actions, such as bulk list updates and document library modifications
